Tagging // Why They’re There and How They Work

Tagging. You may know it as: hash tagging, at’ing, or the thing you do to show someone a tasty meme.

However, tags are an important part of online culture and navigation. We use them to divide and categorise information. YouTube uploaders will often tag subjects or certain words in their description so that when people search for these keywords they are more likely to be seen as a related video.

We use tags to navigate and get to the key information we are after.

This is a universal aid to the internet.

The same can be said for social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to name a few.

Websites will also tend to use tags to decipher what is popular and the more a tag is used the more likely it is to “trend” which means it will have a higher chance of gaining views and lets people know what the hottest topic is.

Take for instance, Justin Bieber using the “#throwback” on his posts to garner attention and let people know it is a past photo. This then puts it into its own category.
